Why Flossmoor Montessori School . . . .
Flossmoor Montessori School continues the creative individual and social education begun by physician-educator, Dr. Maria Montessori resulting from forty years of observation of the child and consequent curriculum development by her and colleagues. Dr. Montessori was uniquely successful in understanding and assisting the child in his time of fundamental human development.
Since our beginning in 1966, FMS had been recognized as a true Montessori school by the Association Montessori International (AMI), the non-governmental Montessori organization that accredits schools, trains teachers throughout
|the world, and promotes the social and educational welfare of the child. Our teachers are trained by the AMI or AMS, hold degrees, and meet continuing education requirements. The faculty consists of directresses (teachers), assistants, a Montessori administrator, and support staff. We are professional about the joy of helping children develop and learn.|
|The child shows us a universal pattern of psychological development, revealing, among other phenomena, sensitive periods, short intervals during which the child is disposed to create a specific part of himself using what the environment provides. Walking and speaking at predictable times are illustrations of these sensitivities in very young children. By addressing these sensitivities and providing appropriate activities in the right psychological manner, Montessori education helps the child to create himself - physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.|
